It's no secret I'm a huge fan of wines from Argentina. Probably a good third of the wines I've reviewed here on Bob's Brew and Liquor Reviews have been from Argentina. Something about that place is magical... at least for wine making!
So for now, we're looking at reviewing a new wine from Graffigna, their 2012 Centenario Elevation Red Blend Reserve.
The 2012 Graffigna Centenario Elevation Red Blend Reserve (man, that's a long name!) is a combination of 20% Malbec, 20% Bonarda, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah, and 20% Tannat. It's produced in the San Juan region of Argentina which is in a valley on the Western portion of Argentina.
It pours a deep garnet color with blood red edges in the glass. The aroma is that of powerful blackberries and plum, with hints of vanilla lingering in the background. Tasting brings flavors of rich, bright and juicy blackberry jelly, pungent oak and vanilla bean leading to a puckering, fairly tannic finish full of earthy dry cloves, cacao, and a bit of black pepper.
This wine is powerful, deep, balanced, yet earthy... AND exactly why I love many of the wines from Argentina.
Easily one of the better wines I've had in months, and amazingly under $20 a bottle. A delicious steal. I had it alongside thick, rare, grilled ribeyes and it matched perfectly.
Drink This: if you want an impressive, moderately earthy, powerful red for under $20.
Don't Drink This: if you're looking for a delicate red wine.
