Cupcake Malbec

Cupcake Vineyards Malbec
2010
Mendoza, Argentina

So, here's another Cupcake wine.  I've already reviewed their Red Velvet and Cabernet Sauvignon wines.  I actually found their Red Velvet to be better than their Cab, which surprised me. It was only a matter of time before I reviewed their Malbec...

I kind of assumed I would enjoy this (since I'm a huge fan of Malbec), but being that it's a Cupcake wine it could have gone either way (theirs are always hit or miss for me).

Like most modern Malbecs, this is from the Mendoza Region of Argentina which is thriving in popularity.  Of course, there's no way of telling exactly who this is sourced from, but that's alright.

Cupcake's 2010 Malbec pours a dark, yet clear, purple and has moderately strong aromas of spiced blackberries.  Tasting brings rather bright flavors of plum jam, holiday spices, and a hint of earthy savoriness in the finish.

This wine is quite acidic and spicy, while still having hints of the potential rustic earthiness Malbecs can have.  While I would have preferred a bit more rustic profile and depth, this wine isn't bad.  Yes, it's a bit young tasting and perhaps a tad too acidic, but there's definitely some good Malbec flavors going on.  Maybe next year's vintage will be a little more balanced.

Check out my other Malbec reviews here.

Drink This: if you want a spicy, youthful Malbec.
Don't Drink This: if you're looking for an earthy, deep, complex Malbec.

Cheers!

  1. This wine is horrible, not even close to what a real Malbec is.
Cupcake wants a piece of the market with the popularity of Malbec and gave us this...... I don't know how to even call this. I can say that one of the few times that I didn't finish a bottle of Malbec.
